Cool Web Site About Lake Merritt and Local Area

September 10th, 2010 · No Comments

After a walk around Lake Merritt, my wife looked up an interesting Web site, then told me about it.  Once Upon a Time, Happily Ever After is “a public art project set at Lake Merritt…with the goal of raising awareness and deepening the commitment to preserving and enhancing a cultural heritage that belongs to all the people of Oakland.”

The three main parts of the site are:

  1. A downloadable audio (mp3) walking tour around the lake
  2. Signage showing how the lake is tied into the surrounding watershed
  3. Lake Merritt souvenirs highlighting different aspects of the lake

An intriguing example of information provided by the program is a rock with a plaque saying, “Leon Olson loved to walk here.” Check out the Oakland Tribune article about the plaque and the man to whom it is dedicated.
